2019-Success in the Under 16 Category
Birkirkara Volleyball Club (BKVC) field for the first time in his history field an under 16 female team. Today marked the end of the 2018-2019 season with our youngsters facing the sporting rivals Swieqi Phoenix Challengers and true to their name they did challenge the yellows.
BKVC field a mixture of players with age ranging from 12 years to 15 years. The final encounter started with coach Juliette Vella fielding a strong side with Joeline Barbara captain and Martina Borg as the main setters, Nikolina Filipov Pajic and Alicia Bezzina as middle blockers and the first line of defence and Hannah Ellul and Klyona Fenech as outside spikers. Elisa Mae Azzopardi was Vella’s libero for the match.
The frist set proved to be much more challenging then it was anticipated with Swieqi Pheonix forcing Vella to take two timeouts (11:7 and 20:15). This did very few to dent Phoenix’s rhythm and gameplay. Phoenix took the first home by 25-15.
Coach Vella took a risk and changed the whole dynamics of the team and tactic for the second set. This saw Vella fielding Middle blocker Pajic as setter together with Borg, Kelsey Vassallo and Elena Basta as middle blockers and Alexia De Gray and Angela Grncharevska as outside spikers. With BKVC’s libero Azzopardi owning the backcourt made it possible for Pajic to place good sets for her attackers. Basta raised for the occasion and with her strong and well-placed attacks and well-timed blocks together with good defence by De Gray, and Grncharevska took the BKVC clan in the driving seat. This change yields its results, and the yellow girls brought home the second set for 25:17.
With the score of 1 set each in the bag of both teams, the game was pushed for the third and final set. BKVC girls entered the court focused and meant business. BKVC took the lead by 6-2, but on change of sides, Phoenix managed to gain points to come 1 point short of BKVC. From this point onwards, both teams gaining one point at a time breathing on each other’s neck and fighting for every point of the game. At the end saw the Rahal girls having the upper hand and closing the set 16:14.
This win confirmed that BKVC La Siciliana as runners up in their first participation in the under 16 national league.
