This weekend saw two teams from the Birkirkara Clan in action with the BKVC Luxfair Realty facing Mellieha Tritons on Friday night at Cottonera Sports Complex and the derby in which BKVC La Siciliana Under 16 faced Fleur-de-Lys on Sunday morning.

BKVC Luxfair Realty faced Mellieha in the last commitment of the first round. Mr Shebani had to face this encounter without two of his regular players, the Italian Jolanda Paolini and the Irish-Egyptian Noor Elkohli. This lead to new formation and the insertion of new players in the starting formation with the naturalised Maltese Zsanette Orvos and Turkish Ceren Piazza on court from the beginning. Mellieha found it hard to counter attack Birkirkara’s plays. On the 22 point mark for BKVC, BKVC skipper carried his first two substitutions. Fielding the new recruit Maudline Sammut as outside spiker and Joeline Barbara as opposite. BKVC managed to close the first set 25-10.

The second set was a replica of the first, Mellieha finding it difficult to repel the BKVC Luxfair plays and attacks. With a comfortable gap of 14 points, BKVC coach made use of all his bench players Joeline Barbara was the first to be put in the mix, with her junior team mates soon following. Klyona Fenech and Kelsey Vassallo both promising junior players of BKVC nursery made on court on the 23rd and 24th point respectively. BKVC closed the set as they did the first, 25-10.

The third and final set saw BKVC going down for the first time in the game. BKVC took the lead immediately. With a steady string of well placed and strong services by BKVC captain Juliette Vella took her team to 10-3. From this point onwards BKVC never looked back and BKVC coach gave put on court all his available players. With a steady defence, and strong server Mr Shebani put on court a junior front line. With Barbara as opposite, Vassallo as middle blocker and Fenech as outside spiker. Just as happened the week before, it was a junior player that closed the final set and the match, this time was the Birkirkara own Klyona Fenech that closed the set and match.

On Sunday 20th January saw BKVC La Siciliana in action in the derby match against Fleur-de-Lys. Our U16 junior team was in for a cold shower when Fleur-de-Lys took advantage from the beginning of the set. Fleur-de-Lys never looked back and left our junior players chasing the blues for the whole set. Birkirkara’s kids managed to mount a comeback but it was not enough to turn the table in their favour with Fleur-de-Lys winning the 25-23.

The second set was a totally different story. The yellows went on court more focused and determined to not to suffer the same fate of the first set. Ms Juliette Vella changed her players and effected a technical change and placed the team on court in an offensive formation. With BKVC’s solid defence Azzopardi, setters Barbara and Borg distributing the plays close to perfection, gave the opportunity to their team mates to attack with Grncharevska and Vassallo gaining point after point for their side. BKVC La Siciliana won the second set in an assertive way, closing the set 25-9.

This pushed the game to the third and final set. With one set each, both teams gave it their all to close the 3rd set. BKVC strong and with surgical precision services from Filipov-Pajic and Ellul and gave BKVC the advantage. Boosted with superb support, from their families and friends, the six BKVC fighters on court closed the set and the game 15-6.BKVC makes two out of two.
